It has been difficult for Rational Choice Theory (RCT) to gain traction in sociology. Yet, RCT remains the most flexible and powerful analytical lens throughout the human sciences – yes, more powerful and flexible, for social science, than network analysis.
I no longer invoke Weber, Buchanan, Coleman, Elster, Swedberg, Mises, Toqueville, etc., etc., when discussing the importance of Non-Market Decision-Making for sociologists interested in analyzing/evaluating public policies. Nowadays, I simply ask non-rational choice folks the following:
How should/can someone approach non-market decision-making without the theoretical lens of rational choice?
I welcome your responses.
