I will be traveling with my father to the motherland in early April. We plan to fly into Shannon and out of Dublin. We’ll be there for a week and will have a car.

Dublin Castle is very stately and the tour guides are excellent. Worth the entry fee. The Guinness Brewery, though tourist, has stunning views of Dublin and includes a free pint. Howth and Dun Laoghaire are both gorgeous if the weather permits. I haven’t explore much outside of the greater Dublin area, though.
You MUST come to the west! I particularly recommend Galway (where I am doing my PhD at the moment), both the city and in to Connemarra. I am from Clare so I would recommend visiting there also but with only a week you really need to be selective. It really depends on what sort of trip you guys want to have. The west is the best, and has what is distinctive of the Irish experience. Dublin is the only “real” city but you could be anywhere really-it has always been more Dublin than Ireland.
